@deninho32 - thank you for the suggestion; I do already have a lightbox extension installed, and if my understanding is correct, it only affects the display of the image - I am wanting to ensure that the image file as stored on the server is compressed, both to save space (though we have unlimited storage, thank you hosting co) and to speed download/display for other users.
@thecoalman - I'll check whether that is the case with the other admin; since then I've asked another non-admin user to test an image - he used a 9MB 8000x4500px image, it uploaded without a problem and was reduced to 1600x900px (I had changed the dimensions to 2000 x 2000 since I saw that recommended elsewhere).
So I think everything's fine, thanks, but I'll check on the Java suggestion.
