This is common practice and almost every host does this. Contract renewal can be up to 10 times the initial contract price. The low price is to get you to sign up and the ridiculous renewal fees are because most people will pay it instead of going through the hassle of moving.My hosting company is trying to hold mysite hosrage by raising the hosting fee by 8 times.

Most of my members just bought a new plan on the same host and got the introductory price and moved everything to the new sever and canceled the original hosting plan. Your webhost login wont change and if you use your hosts name servers then nothing really changes for you.
You will save a lot of money if you choose 3-4 years and pay up front. If youve been there for three years and have no complaints about the day to day service then there is no major risk since you already know what to expect
